Ballard's Historic Community-Owned Venue
Conor Byrne Cooperative represents a unique model in Seattle's music landscape - Ballard's first community-owned music venue with over 600 member-owners. The building's musical heritage dates to 1901 when it opened as The Owl Saloon - making it one of Seattle's oldest continuously operating music spaces.
Cooperative Ownership Model
In May 2024 - employees - musicians - and community members formed Conor Byrne Cooperative to purchase and preserve this Ballard institution. The cooperative structure provides sustainable revenue streams while ensuring long-term cultural preservation. Members receive drink specials - special event access - and voting rights at annual meetings. The model demonstrates how collective ownership can protect vital cultural spaces from rising costs threatening small venues.
Seven Nights of Live Music
Conor Byrne programs diverse live music every night of the week. Their legendary Sunday open mic - running since before the cooperative era - attracts musicians across all genres. Sign-ups begin at 7:30 PM - with music starting at 8 PM. Tuesday nights feature Country Dance with live bands and free dance lessons. Fourth Mondays host Irish music sessions. The venue also presents matinee shows for early birds - ticketed concerts - and rotating happy hour events including music trivia and bingo.
Intimate Performance Space
The venue's layout creates exceptional intimacy between performers and audiences. Full PA system and backline equipment support acts from solo performers to full bands. The historic Irish pub atmosphere - complete with proper Guinness pours in official glassware - enhances the authentic music experience.
Community Engagement
The cooperative actively seeks volunteers with skills in administration - graphic design - and event coordination. ADA accessibility throughout the venue ensures inclusivity. Most events welcome all ages until door time - though the venue is typically 21+ for evening shows. The cooperative's nonprofit arm - fiscally sponsored by Shunpike Arts - supports early-career musicians and diverse arts programming.
