Overview

Artichoke Music is a nonprofit community music center that has been at the heart of Portland's acoustic music scene since 1973. Named because artichokes are all heart the organization embodies its mission to make music accessible to everyone. This beloved venue serves as a music store performance space production studio and educational center all under one roof.

History and Mission

Founded by Judith Cook-Tucker in 1973 Artichoke Music has passed through the stewardship of several dedicated owners before Steve Einhorn took over in 1981. He and his wife Kate Power nurtured the venue into the wonderful community gathering place it is today. The organization is dedicated to building community through music by providing rewarding experiences for people of all ages to discover learn and play music.

Performance Venue

The intimate 50-person capacity listening room at Artichoke is considered one of Portland's finest acoustic venues. The space creates an atmosphere of reverence for music where audiences give performers their full attention. Live music happens Thursday through Sunday nights featuring a diverse range of acoustic genres including folk Americana blues jazz and singer-songwriter performances.

Open Mic and Jam Sessions

Artichoke hosts several regular open mic and jam sessions. The Acoustic Village Open Mic takes place every other Thursday providing a platform for musicians poets and storytellers. The Portland Bluegrass Sunday Jam occurs on the 2nd and 4th Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM welcoming all skill levels for acoustic bluegrass jamming with a $5 cover at the door. Additional specialized events include Be Heard - An Open Mic for Women's Voices and the Free Open Mic for Teens and Young Adults.

Music Education

As an educational institution Artichoke offers music classes for various instruments and skill levels. Their teaching philosophy emphasizes creating a friendly encouraging environment where people feel welcomed and supported whether they've just picked up their first guitar or are ready to make music their profession. The organization also provides outreach to under-served communities expanding access to music education.
