Acoustic open mic, 2 amps limit, Bring your own instruments

One of Arizona's longest-standing open mics happens every Monday night at Yucca Tap Room, Tempe's original live music venue that's been showcasing talent since the 1970s. This legendary dive bar has become an institution in the East Valley music scene, and Monday nights exemplify why.

The Vibe

Yucca Tap Room doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. This is a classic dive bar with cheap drinks, a no-bullshit atmosphere, and genuine appreciation for live music. The venue features Electric Bat Arcade on one side, adding pinball machines and vintage games to the mix. The crowd is eclectic—ASU students, longtime Tempe residents, musicians supporting their peers, and music lovers who've been coming here for decades.

Performances

Hosted by Kevin Redlich, the open mic welcomes acoustic acts primarily, though limited electric setups are allowed (maximum 2 amps, cocktail drum kits and cajons acceptable). Sign-ups begin at 8 PM with music starting at 9 PM. Each performer gets 3 songs or up to 15 minutes, giving everyone a fair shot at stage time.

The talent level varies wonderfully—from first-timers nervously working through their original songs to seasoned musicians testing new material. The supportive audience creates an environment where taking creative risks feels safe. There's never a cover charge, and weekly drink specials make it accessible for broke musicians and budget-conscious music fans alike.

The open mic draws singer-songwriters, folk musicians, acoustic rock acts, and everything in between. What makes Monday nights special is the longevity—this isn't some flash-in-the-pan event but a deeply rooted tradition that's helped launch countless local music careers while providing a consistent home for the Tempe music community.
