The Camel's Open Mic Night
Wednesday Nights in The Fan
Every last Wednesday of the month, The Camel transforms into Richmond's premier destination for aspiring musicians, seasoned performers, and music lovers seeking authentic live performances. Hosted by Warren Campbell of the rock band Dead Billionaires, this open mic has built a reputation as one of RVA's most welcoming and energetic performance opportunities.
The Vibe
The atmosphere strikes a perfect balance between supportive and electric. Sign-ups begin at 7:00 PM with music starting at 8:00 PM, giving performers time to settle in, grab a drink, and connect with fellow musicians. The crowd is genuinely engaged—these aren't passive listeners scrolling through their phones, but active supporters who came specifically for live music.
Campbell brings his rock and roll energy to the hosting duties, creating an environment that empowers audiences through the music while keeping the evening moving with professional pacing. The venue's standing-room-only format (unless otherwise noted) creates an intimate club atmosphere where performers and audience share the same space without artificial barriers.
Performances
The Camel welcomes all styles and skill levels, from singer-songwriters testing new material to full electric bands running through original compositions or creative covers. The full backline—drums, amps, and sound system—means musicians can arrive with just their instrument and plug in. This accessibility has made the event a proving ground for Richmond's emerging talent.
Performers get a genuine showcase opportunity in a venue known throughout Virginia for supporting underground and independent music. The room has personality—cozy yet capable of handling the energy when a performer delivers something special. Past open mics have featured everything from acoustic folk to hard-driving rock, spoken word to experimental noise, all welcomed with equal enthusiasm.
Free for those 21 and over ($5 for under 21), the event remains accessible while maintaining the quality and professionalism that The Camel is known for throughout RVA's music community.
