Overview
Poor House Bistro brings the authentic sights sounds and tastes of New Orleans to San Jose operating out of a historic Victorian home in the city's Little Italy district. Originally opened in 2005 in the Meduri family home the venue was purchased by Google and the entire structure was moved several blocks north in 2022 to its current location at 317 W St John Street. This New Orleans-style juke joint and eatery has become a staple in the local music scene and a beloved gathering spot near the SAP Center.
Live Music Program
Poor House Bistro features live music seven days a week making it one of the most consistent venues for blues and roots music in the South Bay. Wednesday evenings from 6-9 PM host a blues jam with rotating seasoned hosts - the jam has been on and off over the years but has recently returned strong with regulars taking turns leading the session. Thursdays feature the PHB Famiglia Band led by owner Jay Meduri and weekends showcase rotating blues acts. Sunday brunches from 10 AM-2 PM often feature jazz artists while afternoon sets can include blues rock reggae or country - and it's all free with no cover charge.
Venue and Atmosphere
The restaurant maintains its historic Victorian charm while creating that authentic New Orleans funky atmosphere. An outdoor patio with live music creates an intimate setting perfect for experiencing blues up close. The venue also hosts one of the stages at the annual San Jose Fountain Blues & Brews Festival cementing its role as a cornerstone of the local blues community. Food and Drink
The menu celebrates classic New Orleans and Creole Italian cuisine featuring blackened chicken wings BBQ shrimp platter seafood gumbo Cajun popcorn salad po'boys crawfish pasta red beans and rice corn muffins jambalaya and muffaletta. The restaurant offers a full bar Italian wine and craft beer selection. With over 20 years of fine Cajun-style cooking Poor House uses the freshest ingredients and you can taste the love that goes into every dish.
Location and Access
Poor House Bistro is conveniently located near Caltrain and SAP Center about a 5-minute walk from the arena. The venue offers free parking in the back lot and metered street parking is available nearby potentially free at night and on Sundays. Hours vary by day - the bistro is closed Mondays and Tuesdays except for Sharks games and some SAP events. Wednesday and Thursday hours are 11 AM-2 PM and 5-8 PM Friday and Saturday 11 AM-9 PM and Sunday 10 AM-7 PM with brunch from 10 AM-2 PM.
