Preserving Heritage, Teaching Excellence

The Afro American Music Institute (AAMI) is a pillar of cultural education in Pittsburgh. Founded by Dr. James Johnson and Pamela Johnson, the institute is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of African American music traditions, particularly Jazz, Gospel, and Blues.

Education and Performance

Located in the Homewood neighborhood, AAMI provides world-class instruction to students of all ages. It is not just a school, but a performance center where the legacy of Pittsburgh's rich jazz history is kept alive through the 'Boys Choir', Jazz Ensembles, and public recitals.
