Preserving American Heritage Music
Mountain Music Parlor is Reno's first and only Early American Music School Folk Instrument Shoppe and Listening Room all dedicated to teaching preserving and celebrating traditional American heritage music. Located at 735 South Center Street in a beautifully restored 110-year-old Arts and Crafts bungalow the venue has been an essential part of Midtown's cultural landscape since 2015. Founded by Renee and Donald Lauderback passionate advocates for grassroots music the venue embodies a mission to keep America's musical heritage alive and thriving.
Jam Sessions & Musical Community
The venue hosts eight different monthly jam sessions welcoming all ages and skill levels from absolute beginners to seasoned professionals. These include Bluegrass Jam Class Old Time Jam Celtic Sessions Cowboy Music Hawaiian Ukulele Club Dulcimer Club and Mighty Mike's Blues & Old School Country Jam. The Bluegrass Jam Class teaches traditional tunes melodies licks and break strategy in a no-judgment supportive environment. The Old Time Jam features authentic Appalachian tunes with Irish and Scottish heritage played together without breaks. Mighty Mike's Blues Jam is led by veteran bluesman Mike Schermer who has toured with legends like Bonnie Raitt Elvin Bishop and Charlie Musselwhite. A small $5 donation is requested at jams to help maintain the venue.
Instrument Shop & Heritage Hall
The folk instrument shop features high-grade new rare and vintage instruments including banjos fiddles dulcimers mandolins guitars concertinas and more - many handmade by American craftspeople. Renee travels the country seeking instruments made in barns basements and workshops ensuring authentic quality. The intimate Heritage Hall listening room hosts top-shelf award-winning artists in concerts throughout the year. The venue also offers private lessons group classes workshops and professional instrument repair services.
Monthly Open Mics
The Fourth Wednesday Songwriter Open Mic provides a welcoming platform for singer-songwriters in an intimate listening room setting. A small PA system is provided and the decent platform stage creates perfect conditions for acoustic performances. Songwriters are especially encouraged to share original material though covers are also welcome. The venue maintains a family-friendly atmosphere with plush seating and a relaxed vibe perfect for enjoying traditional American music.
