Jazz jam with different house band each week. Come join the fun and check out some of the most creative and versatile musicians from Philly and beyond.

Every Monday, Fishtown's Black Squirrel Club transforms into Philadelphia's premier jazz jam session destination. Led by bassist Richard Hill Jr., this weekly gathering brings together some of the area's most creative and versatile musicians for what locals call "the hottest jam session in Philly."

The vibe is electric yet welcoming. Hill curates a different house band each week, composed of Philadelphia's finest jazz musicians, ensuring that no two Mondays are ever alike. The house band performs from 6:30-7:30 PM, setting a high bar with sophisticated arrangements and tight ensemble playing. At 7:30 PM, the session opens to all musicians, creating a delightfully unpredictable adventure where seasoned professionals share the stage with emerging talents.

The venue itself—a converted 1890s steam plant—provides the perfect backdrop with exposed brick walls, vintage chandeliers, and authentic cobblestone areas. Doors open at 6:30 PM, and musicians should arrive early to sign up, as the list fills quickly. The session runs until 9:30 PM, with admission only $5.

Performances range from hard-swinging bebop standards to contemporary jazz compositions, with the quality consistently exceptional. The crowd includes serious jazz enthusiasts who listen attentively, creating an environment where musical risks are rewarded and creativity flourishes. You never know who might show up—touring musicians often drop in between gigs, local conservatory students test their skills, and established pros come to unwind and explore.
