Cannonball Music Hall — Raleigh's Underground Above Ground
Cannonball Music Hall is one of Raleigh's most beloved independent live music venues — scrappy by design and fiercely community-focused. Founded by Cassie Frye and James McMillian in the wake of the pandemic years when the hunger for real live music became impossible to ignore Cannonball was built from the ground up without venture capital or corporate backing. Just elbow grease bootstraps and a genuine love for the kind of music that makes your ears ring.
Tucked inside the Raleigh Iron Works complex on Atlantic Ave in Midtown Raleigh the venue sits in an area that has become one of the city's most exciting creative corridors. Cannonball's ethos is clear the moment you walk in: this is a place for real musicians and real music fans — not a backdrop for Instagram photos but a room where things actually happen.
The Space
The main room holds up to 100 people in standing room only mode and 80 in theater-style seating. The stage measures 9 feet deep by 20 feet wide — small enough to feel intimate but with enough room for a full band setup. The atmosphere is warm and raw with mismatched seating a bar and the kind of lived-in feel that only comes from being genuinely used and loved. A disco ball hangs above the floor — the unofficial mascot of Cannonball's weekly open mic nights.
Sound System and Tech
Despite its indie roots Cannonball runs a solid professional rig. Front of house is handled by a Behringer X32 Compact digital mixer fed through a 16-channel stage box. The speaker system features QSC E112 mains a QSC E118 subwoofer and multiple QSC CP12 monitors. The mic locker includes Shure SM58 and SM57 mics Sennheiser e609 guitar cab mics sE Electronics V7 vocal mics and a full Presonus DM7 drum mic set. Whether you're a touring act or a first-time open mic performer you'll be well supported sonically.
Live Music Programming
Cannonball's calendar is diverse and deliberately eclectic. Regular programming spans punk metal hip hop indie rock bluegrass burlesque performances karaoke and comedy. The venue intentionally avoids genre silos — on any given month you might see a motown-inspired groove act followed by a metal showcase followed by a horror movie night. Cannonball actively books local and regional artists and is openly critical of the industry trend toward AI-generated promotional materials — they actively commission local artists for show posters.
Open Mic Nights
Every Tuesday evening Cannonball hosts its popular weekly Open Mic Night. Signup opens at 7:00 PM and music begins promptly at 7:20 PM with only 8 performance slots available each week. The format is open to all genres and configurations — solo acoustic acts bands full electric setups spoken word and experimental performances are all welcome. House backline includes drums keyboard PA mics and setups for two guitars and one bass. The crowd votes on each performer and a monthly Belle of the Ball title is awarded to the fan favorite — adding a fun competitive edge to the communal night.
Rehearsal Rooms
Cannonball operates private band rehearsal rooms available for booking by local musicians. This is a significant resource in Raleigh's music ecosystem where affordable rehearsal space is consistently hard to find. Musicians can book time in the rooms separately from show nights making Cannonball a genuine day-to-day hub for working artists in the city.
Special Events and Community Initiatives
Beyond the regular calendar Cannonball runs themed special events including music bingo nights millennial mixtape dance parties burlesque showcases and charity benefit shows. The venue has partnered with nonprofits and community organizations to donate portions of ticket sales to causes including education-focused charities. Cannonball is also openly committed to supporting local visual artists — working musicians photographers and designers can reach out directly about collaborating on show materials.
